A character can only spend a certain amount of mana per skill check, which is determined by that character's level. A character may also use more dice when casting a spell that uses their primary color (race color) or secondary color (class color). If a character is mono-colored or the spell used corresponds to both of a character's colors, these maximum dice boosts are stacked.
Ex. A level 5 blue/green character wants to use the skill Bluff (a blue/black skill). The maximum mana the character could use would be 6 (4 base + 2 for primary color boost). If the character wanted to use Craft ( white/red skill) the player could only use up to 4 mana. If the character wanted to use knowledge (a blue/green skill), the character could use a maximum of 7 mana (4 base + 2 primary color boost + 1 secondary color boost).
This maximum mana spent does not include mana spent to convert mana colors, only mana used to add to the dice pool. (In other words, converting mana is its own process and is done before investing mana into the skill use)
